On Saturday, February 7th, the Metropolitan Oval U-12 boys finished as runner-ups in the 2015 NYC Indoor Classic held at Pratt Institute. The boys played a total of five games, finishing the day with a record of 4 wins and 1 loss. Conceding just one goal in its first three matches, the team finished the group stage with three strong wins against Teaneck SC, BW Gottschee, and Manhattan SC 1. The team brought its confident and intelligent play into the knockout stage, beating Manhattan SC 2 in the semi-finals.
Coach Christian said of the team's performance, “I was very happy with the way the boys came out. On the day, I felt we were the most technical team that played the best brand of soccer.” The boys’ quick passing and off-ball movement was key in generating quality scoring opportunities, which was a major going into the tournament. Having scored double-digit goals and conceding just 3, the team looked confident and strong heading into the finals against Kosmos FC. It was a very tightly contested match full of quality soccer and excitement, but in heartbreaking fashion, the boys lost 2-3. In a post-game interview, coach Christian explained, “Our mentality is always focused on the quality of performance rather than the final result. Despite the unfortunate result in the finals, I’m proud of the team because I thought all of the boys played great Met Oval soccer today.” He went on to describe the exciting potential of this team when he said, “I only see a bright future for this group.”
Next up for Met Oval U-12 is the MSC pre-season tournament, which will be the team’s final competitive preparation for their 2015 regular season in the U12 Northeast Pre-Academy League. The first regular season game is slated for Saturday, March 7th against Red Bull New York. As coach Christian described, “We are very much on the right track and will continue to work hard in training.”
