On Saturday, February 7th, the Metropolitan Oval U-13 pre-Academy boys won the U-14 2015 NYC Indoor Classic held at Pratt Institute. The boys played a total of five games on their way to the championship, finishing the day with a record of 4 wins and only 1 loss. Group stage wins came against Manhattan Soccer Club and tournaments hosts, Central Brooklyn, while the team’s one blemish was a hard fought game against MatchFit. After advancing to the knockout stage, the boys ousted Brooklyn Italians via penalty-kicks after goalless regulation and overtime periods in the semi-finals before beating local rivals BW Gottschee in the finals to win the tournament. Coach Christian said of the team’s mentality going into the tournament, “The coaching staff really made sure the focus was on producing a quality and consistent performance instead of just winning. We wanted to play the Met Oval way.” In an interview, coach Christian described this as a possession based style that is highlighted by sharp, decisive passing in order to create many scoring opportunities coupled with organized and disciplined team defending. “The boys were very well organized throughout the tournament and effectively executed our offensive and defensive tactics” said coach Christian of the boys’ performance. “They played for each other and with a lot of heart. I’m proud of the boys and of this accomplishment, one that I feel we definitely deserved.”
Consistent intense and hard training is certainly paying off for the Met Oval U-13’s. Certainly, the boys have been showcasing their technique and tactical understanding during recent games. While they are very excited about this achievement, the boys have since resumed regular training at Met Oval and are eager to continue to improve and develop both individually and collectively as a team. Next up for Met Oval U-13 is their regular season in the Pre-Academy League, which is only a month away. The players and coaching staff are both very excited and look forward to start the start of the season.
