The Met Oval U12s have won the 2015 FC Delco Players Cup. Competing in the tournament’s highest U12 bracket, Met Oval showcased their possession-based and attacking oriented style of soccer against high-level opposition. The boys welcomed the added pressure of knowing that the current Met Oval U13 won this tournament in 2014. In fact, it was a source of motivation that fueled them throughout the weekend.
Noteworthy Met Oval victories came at the expense of Ohio Premier (3-1) and McLean Youth Soccer (4-0) in the group stage. Competing 11v11 for the first time, the team impressively utilized the additional space in which to operate and the additional players with whom to combine. Led by Piero Elias and Jayson Chirino in midfield, Met Oval dictated the games’ tempo via their polished touch, quick and accurate passing, and advanced level of awareness. With brilliant speed and agility, Juan Osorio continually tested the oppositions’ defense, finishing the tournament with a total of 6 goals and 3 assists.
The Cup Final proved to be Met Oval’s biggest challenge against a very strong PDA team. Tenacious defense led by Jobany Garcia, Jacton Tlaczani, and goalkeeper Manny Smalios helped Met Oval maintain a clean sheet through overtime. Moreover, it set the stage for a beautiful Nicholas Killen winner in the penalty-kick shootout and Cup Final victory for Met Oval (5-4).
Huge congratulations to our boys and to coach Christian Galvan for a well-deserved championship title in this age group for the 2nd year in a row!
Met Oval's U9 and U10 teams also competed in the Memorial Day weekend tournament. The U9s also displayed possession-based and attacking oriented soccer while posting impressive results, including a strong victory against the eventual tournament champion. The boys were disappointed to miss out on the semi-final round by one point, but the coaching staff was delighted with their development and positive attitude.
The U10s were slotted in a very competitive bracket and faced the added challenge of injuries to key players. While the team did not advance to the semi-final round, the boys maintained the Met Oval style of play and showcased a physical and mental toughness that will undoubtedly carry them forward.
