Met Oval would like to congratulate its former Technical Director Paul Buckle upon his appointment as Head Coach of reigning USL Pro champions Sacramento Republic FC. Buckle accepted the job after his predecessor at the Republic, 2014 USL Coach of the Year Predrag “Preki” Radosavljević, resigned to take up a managerial role in the U.K. at an as-yet-unnamed club. Buckle began his coaching duties in Sacramento on July 12. In his first match in charge just two days later, the Republic notched a 1-0 win at home in a friendly against Sunderland of the English Premier League.
Buckle takes over the Republic at a critical time in the club’s history. In its debut season last year the team not only won the USL crown, it also broke the league’s attendance record. Its home stadium, Bonney Field, is regularly sold out and the team boasts more than 9,000 season ticket holders—more than several MLS clubs. The success and buzz in Sacramento has the Republic’s owners pushing to join MLS as soon as possible.
This season, having played 19 of 28 regular season games, the Republic sits in fourth place, two points behind Western Conference leaders LA Galaxy II. Met Oval wishes Paul the best of luck as he leads the Republic through the final games of the regular season and on into the playoffs in its quest to repeat as champions.
