The Metropolitan Oval U-10 boys are 2015 Serie Futsal League champions. In a league that was comprised of some of the best U-10 teams in the New York area, Met Oval U-10 split their squad, sending two teams into action in order to maximize our players’ touches, playing time, and game experience. The boys competed in a 6-game league season against the U-10s from Albertson, Empire FC, Manhattan Kickers FC, and two MSC teams. The league culminated with three competitive and exciting playoff games that took place this past weekend, February 28th-March 1st.
Met Oval U-10 Blue beat Albertson ‘04 Academy in the quarterfinals in a tale of two halves. After going up 7-2 in the first half, the boys fought off a roaring Albertson comeback and held on for a 9-8 victory. In the semi-finals, Met Oval played an excellent MSC team in a competitive contest that saw high quality soccer from the opening whistle. It took a thrilling penalty-kick shootout and two big time saves from Met Oval goalkeeper Max Pfaffman to give Met Oval U-10 Blue the victory and a trip to the finals.
After draining quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, Met Oval had to regroup and prepare for a final match against a familiar and very technical side in Empire FC, whom they beat earlier in the season. The first half saw a good brand of soccer from both sides. However, Met Oval showed no signs of fatigue from the earlier rounds in their second half performance. They applied a tremendous amount of pressure and maintained a possession-based, uptempo, and attacking style of soccer to propel themselves to a 9-5 victory. Head coach Danny Rodriguez was delighted with the boys’ performance and proud of their ability to stick to the Met Oval style of play throughout the competitive playoff rounds.
Next up for the Met Oval U10’s is the spring season in the NYCLS Division 1. Before that, however, the boys will compete in the elimination playoff round of the NY Cup later this month. The entire club would like to congratulate Coach Danny and the U-10 boys for their winter success, as well as wish them luck in the upcoming spring season!
The Metropolitan Oval U-12 boys are also 2015 Serie Futsal League Champions. The U-12's built off their NYC Indoor Classic success earlier this month and played an attractive style of soccer on their way to the futsal championship. Coach Christian Galvan was happy with the boys' performance and cited the team's development and improving ability to play a possession-based, uptempo, and attacking style of soccer.
Next up for Met Oval U-12 is the MSC pre-season tournament, which will be the team’s final competitive preparation for their 2015 regular season in the U12 Northeast Pre-Academy League. The first regular season game is slated for Saturday, March 7th against Red Bull New York. As coach Christian described, “We are very much on the right track and will continue to work hard in training.”
