Met Oval sweeps local rival Gottschee
Met Oval swept local rivals Gottschee this past weekend in the latest edition of the Queens youth derby. The Pre-Academy fixtures saw Met Oval U12-Blue and U12-White teams take on Gottschee at Maspeth’s Youth Center of Excellence.
In what is always a heated fixture, Met Oval U12-Blue responded well after a sluggish start and headed into halftime with a 3-1 lead on goals from Abdul Seck, Pierro Elias, and Omar Torres. The boys never looked back as they played aggressive, attacking soccer for the remainder of the match. Second half goals came from Niko Kapandaze, Juan Osorio and Balthazar Saunders, cruising to a 10-4 victory.
Energized and motivated by their club mates’ result, Met Oval U12-White looked to continue the winning ways. However, the boys found themselves down 0-2 after another slow start. The team’s resilience and strong character enabled them to power back en route to a dominant 7-2 victory.
The coaching staff is very excited by this group’s progression. Strong performances from this past weekend coupled with those against the New York Red Bulls earlier this season speak volumes of the strength of this Met Oval squad. Everyone at the club is encouraged by their performances and excited to see their continued development.
U14 Academy defeats Cedar Stars 4-2
Met Oval's U14 USSF Academy team hosted Cedar Stars at Met Oval on Sunday in what is becoming a new local rivalry. In front of the USSF scouts, Met Oval executed a tactically sound game plan en route to a 4-2 victory with goals from Esad Mackic, Ethan Williams, Sal Rasizzi and Luis Ten Jarpa. After a 1-1 tie with Gottschee the week prior, this Met Oval Academy team is truly hitting its stride in the final third of the season.
NY State Cup Victories
Met Oval U10 hosted Samba FC in the quarterfinals of the New York State Cup. There was no shortage of excitement as the team treated spectators to one of the season’s most thrilling games.
The boys played Met Oval styled soccer throughout the match: dominating possession and working through the opponents’ lines via attacking-oriented soccer. However, they did not convert with a goal initially and two strong Samba FC attacking sequences led to two goals for the visitors. Down 0-2, the Met Oval boys maintained composure and trust in their tactical game plan. Continuing their methodical and technically focused style of play, the boys notched two goals in the final 15 minutes, including an absolute wonder strike from defender Alexander Vaimakis, sending the game into overtime.
Energized by the equalizing goal, Met Oval held strong defensively throughout the overtime period. The boys were finally rewarded after a series of up-tempo combination passes led to a tantalizing run by Ezra Widman, beating two defenders and the keeper to seal the victory for Met Oval U10 in front of delighted supporters.
Met Oval U12 advanced in the New York State Cup beating Brooklyn club SABA 4-2 in a Friday night fixture.
